Mutual of Omaha Member Experience Portal

Providing Guidance to Create an Inclusive Design System

Mutual of Omaha Overview

Mutual of Omaha is a Fortune 500 insurance and financial services company that provides life, health, retirement, and workplace benefits solutions to individuals, families, and employers across the United States. The company supports millions of customers through a range of products and digital experiences designed to help people manage their benefits, protect their financial well-being, and plan for the future.

My Role

As an Accessibility Subject Matter Expert and Consultant, I partnered with Mutual of Omaha’s design team to develop the Workplace Benefits Member Experience portal, ensuring accessibility was embedded throughout the design system. I provided accessibility guidance, reviewed designs against WCAG 2.2 AA standards, and collaborated with cross-functional teams to create a more inclusive and accessible experience for all members.

Project Goal

The team sought to create a member portal that was accessible by design, giving employees, dependents, and their families an inclusive way to manage benefits and access critical information. By embedding accessibility requirements into wireframes and visual designs from the start, the team aimed to reduce barriers, address potential issues early, and establish a strong foundation for the organization's first direct-to-member digital experience.

Initial Non-Annotated Design Examples

Global Component Annotations

I started by annotating shared global components, such as the header, that appeared across multiple pages. Establishing accessibility requirements at the component level created a consistent foundation that could be reused throughout the experience. This streamlined the annotation process and reduced the need to document the same requirements repeatedly.

Page-Level Annotations

After annotating the global component sets, I reviewed a representative sample of pages to ensure each template met accessibility requirements. This included verifying proper heading hierarchy, defining page regions, and documenting the intended focus order for keyboard navigation.

Outcomes

By providing detailed accessibility annotations and recommendations, I enabled Mutual of Omaha’s design team to proactively address accessibility barriers during the design process while equipping developers with clear implementation guidance that supported the creation of more accessible, standards-compliant digital experiences.
